Masterful Mauser at Rd 5
June 9
By Rolfe Otterness
Dan Mauser and Wyatt McGrath stood atop the results as Round 5 of the Super Series wrapped up on a warm day at SCMX. Mauser was masterful as he topped the 50+B, the 55 B/C and the 65+ classes. Pretty good to spot the young kids (50+) by 15 years and still top the podium! Then Wyatt McGrath had a great day once again as he dominated at a younger slot on the age scale- topping the Schoolboy 2 12-17, 14-24 B, 250 B and Open B classes. Completing eight motos per day is a pretty challenging feat and he won all but one. The track was in excellent shape for the 529 entries as all the recent wet weather did not result in an overly rutted surface thanks to some efficient track grooming.
Mason Lewison and James Schaffer ran side by side into turn one as the first 250 C moto was released from the gate, Beau Noaeill was quickly by and into the lead. Tyler Maas and Jaydon Nyeggen slipped by Schaffer too and held on to 2-3 positions at the conclusion of lap one. Maas pulled up to hound Noaeill and they ran in a close battle for the next few laps but Maas prevailed as he took over on the last lap. Nyeggen was not too far back for third with Schaffer maintaining fourth over Spencer Hein.
Nyeggen jumped out to lead right away in moto 2 while Noeill and Maas resumed their battle form from the first moto and Hein pursued in fourth. Nyeggen had a good pace going and held on all the way to take the win with about 3 seconds of margin over Maas, who displaced Noeill in second about halfway into the moto. Hein retained fourth at the flag with a bit of a gap over Luke Carlson.
Landon Gottas jumped to the early lead as the 65cc 10-11 minis hit the track. He was running strong but Eli Bumgardner and Beau Engel showed they were going to be in the running as they dropped in behind him. Bumgarder put the hammer down and closed in for the kill around the halfway point of the race, surging into the lead. Gottas couldn’t retaliate and Bumgardner took the checkered. Engel held on for a nice third place with Thomas McNamara in fourth over Eli Gohr. Bumgardner motored into the lead in moto two and held on for another win with Gottas again crossing the line in second. Engel was third once more with Gohr and McNamara swapping finishing positions as they came in fourth and fifth.
Ricky Connolly snapped up a holeshot to lead the Senior B class around the track for their first moto. He was running pretty quick and pulled a gap while a battle develped behind him with Randy Rupe and Richard Anderley going at it fiercely for a couple laps. Rupe pulled clear a bit near mid-moto though and as the flag waved to end the race, Connolly was about 5 seconds clear of Rupe with Anderley about 5 or so bike lengths behind. Daniel Schoumaker snapped up fourth over Joe Jenniges.
Connolly grabbed the win again in moto two with a strong ride. Anderly took second while Rupe was out of contention with a DNS so Schoumaker grabbed third over Joseph Kozlowski with Jenniges repeating his fifth place finish as in moto one.
