Mcgrath manhandles Memorial weekend
May 26-27

Wyatt McGrath rocked the Spring Creek track in a masterful performance as he took the overall wins in
four classes on both Sunday and Monday’s rounds 3 (Donny Schmit Day) and 4 (Memorial Day) of the
2024 Super Series. That was with eight moto wins on Sunday and 7 wins on Monday as his last
potential win was not to be following a thunderstorm-forced cancellation of the last five motos.
McGrath’s entries constituted 4 of the over 700 entries on Sunday with somewhat lesser numbers
showing up for Monday. Weather forecasters had been predicting rain showers for much of the
weekend but the skies did not let loose until late on Monday. A track change was instituted on
Collarbone as the track swept to the right a bit down the hill then there was a slight left at the bottom
and a sharp right leading to the finish line. Deep ruts developed. (I crashed!)
One other important thing that should be mentioned was the lap of honor for our missing comrade,
Jerry Schulze. A long time veteran of the dirt bike battles, he had over 50 years of experience tearing
around this and other tracks but was taken by cancer after a short few months of sickness this last
winter. Hundreds of riders made their way around the track, led by Jerry’s grandson on Jerry’s last new
bike. Rest in peace Jerry.
Tanner Schlegel fired off the line to lead the first moto of the Schoolboy class into battle with Kyler
Hagedorn quickly slotting into second in pursuit. These two had an edge over the rest of the field as
they pulled away in a battle of their own, but Schlegel had the edge and slipped away bit by bit as the
moto proceeded. Gavin Petit had good speed too and as the moto concluded he held third behind
Hagedorn but solidly ahead of Cooper Couette and Crayten Roberts. Schlegel roosted to the win in
moto two with Hagedorn leading early but dropping back to second after Schlegel’s attack. Myles
Mahowald had a drastically better finish this time, jumping up from 13 th in moto one to third in this
moto. Petit took fourth to tie up third overall and Jett Lewison scored a fifth.
The 35+ A class featured a nice run to the flag by Scott “Scooter” Jendro as he pulled quickly into the
lead and held on for the win in both motos. Nick Jackson ran well to snare second both times out but
could not quite match Jendro’s pace. Rob Kniss had a nice ride for third in moto one but dropped back
to sixth in the second moto. Eugene Olson had a decent outing for fifth in moto one then held second
for quite a while until Jackson made a pass on the downhill coming off Mt. Martin. Olson’s third-place
moto allowed him to grab the number three overall position. Pat Miller’s 4-4 score topped Kniss’
numbers to take fourth overall..
Mason Weller blitzed the start straight to lead the 65cc 7-11 class through turn one, but Levi Geis was
quick to pounce as he took over the lead down the next straight towards the sandwash. Geis was on a
mission and riding like a seasoned pro as he attacked the track to build a lead. Mason Weller settled
into second and Keelan Weller challenged him for a lap or so in third before being displaced by Logan
Wittman. At the checkered flag Geis held a strong lead over Mason Weller with Parker Labeau snaring
third from Wittman late in the moto. Grayden Juenke gobbled up fifth.
Geis zipped into the lead in moto 2 with Labeau following hot on his heels (er..fender) in second.
Mason Weller held on to third for much of the moto and as they race concluded, Geis took the win with
about 3 seconds over the charging Labeau. Landon Gottas managed to wrest the third place position
away from Weller on the last lap but Weller was safely in for fourth and third overall. Juenke again
finished fifth for a 5-5 score and fourth overall. Wittman was fifth overall with a 4-6 tally.
