Larsons cycle & ktm hare scramble
By R. Otterness
Nate Ferderer topped the field as Spring Creek Motocross Park hosted the season opening Hare Scrambles on Mother’s Day (because what more could Moms want?) And as a bonus, it was “blessed” by Mother Nature with enough rain to make it a Mudder’s Day as well. Ferderer overcame the gnarly conditions to top the AA class by about a four minute gap over Nick Swenson, the only two riders to make 5 laps on the AA/A course. A bonus at this round was provided with Larson’s Cycle throwing out $3000 cash purse for the AA riders to sweeten the deal. Thanks to Larson’s!
Moist ground was further saturated with some precip on Saturday night and again on Sunday afternoon to make it a very challenging event. Some alterations were made to course routings to accommodate the change in conditions as appropriate for the skill level of the classes involved. And the race duration had to be adjusted even so as some sections were snarled as riders stalled their bikes, even in the A class.
The AA and A classes were launched onto the muddy course around 1:30 with light rain starting to fall. The slick conditions came into play early on as even Ferderer and Swenson found themselves taking soil (mud) samples and losing time. Lucas Hol ended up with the lead at the end of lap 1. Ferderer, after his mishap early on lap one, began a charge towards the front and after coming through at the end of the first lap in fourth worked his way to the lead by the end of the next lap. Devon Jirik came through in second but Nick Swenson was able to move up from fifth at that point to grab control of second on lap three. The course was deteriorating quite a bit and the race was shortened to 1 hour. Ferderer and Swenson were the only two to start lap 5 before the cutoff and so Jirik, Hol and Logan Cipala ended up with the 3-5 places at the conclusion of their fourth laps. Ferderer held a good pace on the last lap and successfully weaved through sections where riders were stalled as he extended his lead over Swenson by another 47 seconds to finally win the race by 3 minutes, 55 seconds. After the race he commented that he has been living in northern California and riding a lot of hard pack. He borrowed the bike from his brother anit was good to come home and ride in the much different scenario that this race presented. The
Thaden Zengler ran a strong race in the 85cc 7-15 class on his Husqvarna. He led from the start and was the only rider in the class to make it through the gates in time to hit the 6 lap total. Robert Dufour recovered from a problem on lap two when he dropped back a couple places from his then second place position as he passed Carter Niedzielski and then Connor Olmscheid to retake second on lap five. Olmsheid maintained third with Austin Holasek and Niedzielski rounding out the top five.
On the KTM PeeWee track Giovanni Paulino pulled a holeshot to lead lap one as the 50cc Sr. 4-8 class hit the track. Tyson Edelbach kept it close for lap one then took over the lead. It was a tough course for the little guys as the auto clutch bikes were slipping the clutches quite a lot. Edelbach found a challenger on his tail at the end of lap four as Oliver Iverson was closing in fast but Edelbach took the win by 4 seconds. Paulino took third and was the last of the riders to get in four laps. Clayton Hanson took fourth.
